But in 2021, I realized it was time to take a different path: one still rooted in service but no longer anchored in trauma.
What many people don’t realize is that career pivots don’t require starting from scratch. What they do require is understanding your transferable skills. These are the strengths and capacities you’ve already built that can move with you into a new chapter.
From the Courtroom to Coaching
When I launched my interview coaching business, Command the Interview, I wasn’t walking away from my old skills. I was repurposing them.
- The active listening I once used to gather facts and build trust with victims and witnesses? Now I use it to help individuals uncover and articulate their accomplishments.
- The empathy I honed working with trauma survivors? It’s the cornerstone of how I build confidence in clients who doubt their worth.
- The clarity I needed to present complex arguments in court? That’s the same clarity I now help clients bring to their interview stories and career narratives.
Everything I did as a prosecutor, every question asked, every relationship built, every moment of care, was preparing me for this new work.
Communication Is a Career Skill
What struck me most as I made this shift was how many job candidates struggled to communicate their value. They had the qualifications on paper but couldn’t express them in a way that resonated with their audience.
That disconnect inspired me to create Command the Interview.
Communication isn’t just a “soft” skill. It’s the gateway to every opportunity. Interviews, promotions, and partnerships all begin with how you talk about yourself.
Transferable Skills Are Hiding in Plain Sight
If you’re considering a career change or pivot, don’t overlook the skills that feel second nature to you. Just because something comes easily doesn’t mean it’s not valuable.
Ask yourself:
- What types of conversations do I lead?
- How do I build trust?
- What processes have I improved or created?
- What strengths do others consistently rely on me for?
These are clues. These are the skills that will carry forward. These are well beyond your job title.
You’re Not Starting Over. You’re Starting From.
You are not your résumé. You are your capabilities, your perspective, your values, and your potential.
When you pivot, you’re not discarding your past, you’re choosing your next direction.
That’s what I did when I transitioned from prosecutor to entrepreneur. And it’s what I now help others do every day: communicate their worth, own their voice, and command the interview.
